Definition of MicroEnterprise
Microenterprise is defined as a business with five or less employees, which requires $35,000 or less in start up capital and who does not have access to the traditional commercial banking sector for financial assistance.
In Alabama, 86.34% of all businesses employ 5 or fewer employees and
generate over $9 billion dollars in non-farm proprietors’ income.

Micro Enterprise Statistics
The newest version of AEO’s Micro Enterprise Employment Statistics (MEES) and Micro Enterprise Business Statistics (MEBS) are now available.
MEES shows the number of people employed by microenterprises within th state and their percentage of the overall private sector employment. Also included is a county by county breakdown. MEBS shows the percentage of businesses in the state and county which are microenterprises.
